TO BE A GOOD SHOOTER YOU MUST DO SHOOTING DRILLS EVERY DAY. PROPER FORM IS KEY AND FILM EVALUATION IS A MUST. TO BE A GOOD SHOOTER YOU MUST BE ABLE TO CREATE SPACE FROM YOUR DEFENDER AND ALWAYS BE ON BALANCE ...READY TO RELEASE THE BALL FROM A STRONG / LOW STANCE.

Triple Threat Position
The purpose of the triple threat position is to utilize the ability of 3 options :
1 . dribble 2 . shot 3 . pass

The goal of the offensive player should be to put pressure on the defense to cover all three options.
This will occupy the defender and put them in a situation where they have to defend multiple reads and movements.

The only way to maintain the triple threat position is to pivot. There are three types of pivots :
1 . back pivot 2 . front pivot 3. reverse pivot
( names are based on direction of movement )
The key to maintaining a good pivot is to use active feet
active feet is... constant movement of the feet by ( 1. grinding one foot and 2. swinging the other ).
Good pivoting requires : balance
versatility
change of speed
change of direction
mixing and matching

Stance and how the body is positioned is important. Wide feet and bent knees provide strength and balance in the lower body .. while a slight angle of the back with shoulders slightly forward stabilizes the upper body in a strong low stance.

- shoulders over knees
- kness over toes
- wide feet / staggered feet
- balance in all directions

Changing speed and mixing up number of movements makes you less predictable. The defense will read your movements and being to play a weakness or repeated movement. Changing speed is difficult for the defense to defend because one of the defenders goals is to learn the timing of your footwork- both in pivoting and first step. Using two or three pivots and mixing and matching them with other footwork gives the D more to anaylize.

There are 6 ways to create space when having possession of the ball :
1 . Footwork ( ex. dip -n- turn ) ( ex. step back )
2. Change Speed ( while pivoting ) ( while dribbling )
3. Change Direction (while pivoting) (while dibbling)
4. Ball Fake ( dribble fake - pass fake - shot fake )
5. Initiate / Accept Contact ( body to body )
6. Be Unpredictable ( mix - n - match all of the above )

5. Create Contact to create space..... ( body to body )

Ball Positioning :
Ball positioning is where and how the ball is held.
Grip and location are the basis for ball positioning.
There are three ways to hold a basketball :
1. Chin the ball
2. Ball in the pocket
3. Ball in rip through position
( ALSO CALLED A SWING THROUGH )
__________________________________________________________________________________________
BALL IN THE POCKET :

This location enables quick and strong ability to utilize all 3 options.
1) dribble 2) shot 3) pass
Ball should be tight to body ( two hands squeezing ball )
Ball should be below shoulder and above knee
__________________________________________________________________________________________
CHIN THE BALL :

This location provides strength and good positioning for a quick overhead pass ( possibly an outlet pass ).
Use this position when grabing a defensive rebound :
1. Because when you get a rebound there should be other players around you and more opportunity for contact means a greater chance of loosing grip on the ball
2. You will be passing after the rebound is gathered.. it is not often wise to dribble in traffic ( and this height is too high to begin a dribble )
Squeezing the ball with pressure from the outside ( elbows out and up ) is the key
__________________________________________________________________________________________
R I P T H R O U G H P O S I T I O N :

This location provides speed to make a quick move using the dribble.
Getting low is the key in making a quick 1st step.
Having the ball low is also necessary for starting the dribble with a strong bounce.
1. Keep the ball in between your feet ( dont over extend off balance )
2. Discipline your stance ( stay low - stay strong )

Dribbling is a form of Ball Transportation
........................................................................................................................................
There are 3 reasons to dribble :
1. to create space from the defender
2. to create a shot for yourself
3. to create a passing lane for a pass to a teammate
......................................................................................................................................
There are 4 ways to bounce the ball :
1. taps ( low and fast )
2. pound ( hard and knee height )
3. delay ( slower and higher )
4. swinging or changing hands ( side to side )
...............................................................................................................................................
Dribble Moves :
In and Out
Crossover
Step Back
Step Slide
Stop and Go
Spin
(Speed Dribble)
.........................................................................................................................................
Keys to dribbling :
Changing Speed
Changing Direction
Seeing the Court ( and all players )
Good Footwork ( strong stance )
Feeling the defender
Reading the Defender
Dribbling with Purpose
Ready to react
Versatility ( able to use both hands )
Attention Span
Hand - Eye Coordination
Hand and Arm ( speed and strength )
Stay low ( height of bounce is key )
Body Usage ( to protect the ball from the defense )
........................................................................................................................................
Dribbling Stance :
Having a strong stance is crucial to dribbling with strength and balance. If you raise up out of your stance you will become... slower.. less explosive.. and vulnerable to a defender stealing the ball. The key to dribbling is to maintain a strong stance at all times.
Strong Stance :
Alignment = shoulders over knees
knees over toes
Wide Feet = balance
On Toes = ready to react
